#1 - Masking: Is It Always Bad?

  • That is, while it is important to be your authentic self, are there times when you act differently (which is usually considered “masking”) that you believe is appropriate?

  • How has masking been a positive experience in your life?

  • On the other side, recall an experience when you did NOT mask and what that was like (how did others react?)

  • Do NOT feel like you have to address each issue I mentioned; there are just suggested aspects to consider.

#2 - CLARIFICATION: Do You Ask or Give TOO Much?

  • Have you been accused of ASKING too many questions, or not understanding something, when it’s maybe been the one giving you the information that has been unclear?

    • What has THAT experience been like for you?

  • How about giving too MANY details…have others told you that you give too much explanation, when you are only trying to make sure they understand what you are meaning?

  • For either, or both of these, what has your experiences been and if you want, give suggestions on how to cope with them when they happen.

#3 - ALEXITHYMIA: How Do You Cope With It?

#5 - Predictability vs. Routine

#4 - Handling Social Events

  • If you have difficulty either being aware of your feelings and/or the feelings of others, WHAT is that experience like for you?

  • What have you learned that has helped you become more aware in either or both situations?

  • What do you typically do when you get invited to a SOCIAL event?

  • What factors determine your decision to go or not go?

  • If you go, do you go early and leave early, or go late and still leave before the end?

  • While routines obviously involved predictability, I’m thinking about times when finish some routine, for example working, and then you have a lot of FREE/Flexible time (which may or may not have been expected).

  • How do you handle, or what do you do with the lack of predictability per se when you have a large amount of time that isn’t structured?

#7 - Autistic Realization - The Light Bulb Moment

#6 - Nice vs. Helpful

  • Do you ever struggle with holding back from saying or doing something that you believe is HELPFUL, and pause and think, maybe the NICE or socially appropriate thing is to NOT doing or saying something?

  • What are recent examples, or times in the past that stand out to you that you acted or didn’t act?

  • Describe your experience when you received your autistic diagnosis (later in life) or when you realized you were probably autistic.

  • That is, it doesn’t have to be when you were officially diagnosed (as some are not even able to do that, or choose not to).

#8 - Coping When Others Overreact

  • What do you do when someone, or others around you, becomes overly emotional, or yells at you?

  • How do you remain calm, or how do you avoid reacting negatively and making the situation worse?

  • That is, what coping skills or strategies do you use in this specific type of situation?
